Dr. John Pegg

SiMERR National Research Centre Director and RCTQ Co-Director Dr. John Pegg spoke at the initialization conference for the development of learning materials under the Department of Education’s MATATAG curriculum held on 3-6 October 2023 in Pasay City.

The conference marked the commencement of a partnership between PNU (through RCTQ) and DepEd in their shared goal to enhance teacher support systems for the MATATAG Curriculum.

Dr. Pegg discussed the science of learning as framework for the learning materials during the second day of the event.

Forty-eight (48) teacher education institutions (TEIs) from various regions across the country expressed their commitment to contributing their expertise to this pivotal partnership project. The initiative aims to develop and implement an effective teacher support system aligned with the revised basic education curriculum encapsulated in the MATATAG framework.

Dr. Pegg and RCTQ Director Dr. Jennie Jocson are joined by curriculum specialists from DepEd.

The primary objectives of the project are twofold: (1) the development of teacher support materials with student worksheets; and (2) conduct and monitoring of the pilot implementation geared to inform the refinement of the learning materials for the revised curriculum. The data gathered during this process will play a crucial role in informing the refinement of learning materials tailored for the revised curriculum.

In January 2023, Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte launched the “MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa” reform agenda which she said will guide the new direction of DepEd and stakeholders in solving basic education challenges.
