RCTQ visited the Dampalit Integrated School in Malabon City as part of the monitoring and evaluation of the pilot implementation of the MATATAG curriculum.

As the Department of Education (DepEd) rolls out teacher training for the implementation of the MATATAG curriculum in all regions, RCTQ commenced the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of the MATATAG curriculum pilot implementation in the National Capital Region (NCR) from February 21-23, 27-29 until March 1, 2024.

This collaborative project with the Department of Education (DepEd) Office of the Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching (OUCT) aims to evaluate the utilization of developed learning resource packages (LRPs) and the implementation of learning action cells (LAC) during the inaugural year of the MATATAG curriculum across all 35 pilot schools.

The pilot phase, concentrated in Malabon City, involves five schools, including Santiago Syjuco Memorial School, Santiago Syjuco Memorial Integrated Secondary School, Tinajeros National High School, Muzon Elementary School, and Dampalit Integrated School.

Preceding the M&E activities were the following capacity-building activities:

  • Capacity building of PNU personnel on the key concepts of the MATATAG curriculum and conduct of M&E on February 8 & 14
  • Capacity building of all 35 pilot school implementers during the MATATAG Summit on February 16
  • Pilot testing of observation tools at Malabon National High School on February 19
  • Capacity building of DepEd personnel in the NCR divisions and researchers from the Philippine Institute for Development Studies PIDS and the USAID-supported Advancing Basic Education in the Philippines (ABC+) Program on February 20

The research activities are slated to extend until April 2024, covering pilot schools in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Region I, Region II, Region VII, CARAGA, and Region XII.

During the National Summit of the MATATAG Curriculum Pilot Implementers held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on 16 February 2024, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte announced the rollout of teacher training to ensure the proper implementation of the new curriculum.

“The MATATAG curriculum, when implemented well with very good teachers in the field, could greatly support our learning recovery efforts and help improve student learning outcomes,” Duterte said, while thanking the 35 schools that are piloting the curriculum in seven regions.
