RCTQ’s Dr. Jennie Jocson and Dr. Allan Reyes with Usec. Gonong and other Summit participants.

RCTQ joined other inclusion advocates in expressing support for the Department of Education (DepEd)-led Language and Inclusion Summit held on 19-20 May 2023 in Pasay City with the theme “Language and Inclusion: Promoting Diversity, Inclusivity, and Equity for All Filipino Learners.”

RCTQ Director Dr. Jennie Jocson, who attended the Summit along with other DepEd partners, said it was “a very timely and productive gathering that accelerates the momentum for all that we have started in inclusive education.”

She said “the Summit proved, among others, that the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) is relevant and crucial in addressing concerns on inclusion and literacy.”

“We welcome policy recommendations from this Summit and, when needed, will always support DepEd in areas within our expertise, such as in capacitating teachers on how to better operationalize in the classroom PPST indicators relevant to inclusion and learner diversity,” Dr. Jocson said.

Dr. Jocson chats with Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chair of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture, on the sidelines of the Language and Inclusion Summit.

The Summit was organized by DepEd’s Curriculum and Teaching group led by Undersecretary Dr. Gina Gonong. According to DepEd Memorandum No. 29, s. 2023 issued by Usec. Gonong, the Summit “envisioned the true realization of inclusion in education by placing premium on the richness of our language and celebrating the diversity of our country.”

One of the highlights of the Summit was the presentation of action points and recommendations from the Language and Inclusion Pre-Summit held on 4-5 May 2023. It also featured plenary sessions, panel discussions, presentations and exhibits that promoted better understanding of the role of language in promoting inclusion and literacy.

Joining Dr. Jocson was senior program manager Dr. Allan Reyes and project officer Mr. Mikkey Tuazon.
