RCTQ’s host institution—the Philippine Normal University— continues to make a mark internationally for its excellence in teacher education.

RCTQ Director Dr. Jennie Jocson—also the PNU Vice President for Academics—traveled to Brunei Darussalam yesterday to represent PNU at the ceremonial signing of an agreement between PNU and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization – Regional Centre for Vocational and Technical Education and Training (SEAMEO VOCTECH).

SEAMEO VOCTECH signed two memoranda of understanding (MOUs) each with the Universiti Brunei Darussalam and PNU. Under the MOU, PNU will help develop and provide certifications for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) teacher training programs in SEAMEO member countries.

VP and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte—the current SEAMEO Council President—poses with officials of SEAMEO VOCTECH, Universiti Brunei Darussalam and the Philippine Normal University after the ceremonial signing.

Dr. Jocson signed the agreement with SEAMEO VOCTECH Centre Director Mr Alias Haji Abu Bakar. The ceremonial signing was witnessed by Philippine Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte who is also in Brunei this week to fulfill her duty as president of the SEAMEO Council.

“This partnership with SEAMEO VOCTECH provides an enormous platform for PNU to lend its expertise in teacher education. We are honored to be able to help other Southeast Asian countries as they strengthen the quality of their respective TVET institutions,” said VP Jocson.

PNU is officially designated as country’s National Center for Teacher Education by virtue of Republic Act 9647. PNU’s course offerings include technology and livelihood education (TLE), one of the core areas of TVET, which is available in its South Luzon campus.

SEAMEO is a regional intergovernmental organization established in 1965 among Southeast Asian countries to promote regional cooperation on education, science and culture. It is composed of 11 member countries including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.

VOCTECH is one of SEAMEO’s centers, based in Brunei, which assists member countries in addressing common issues in TVET through professional development, research, consultancy, and information dissemination. (RCTQ Comms)
