RCTQ Director Dr. Gina Gonong discussed how professional standards are benchmarks of excellence for teachers and school leaders at a webinar workshop organized by the New Era University (NEU) for its academic community on 4 January 2022.  In a separate forum on 22 January 2022, teachers from a group of private schools learned about lesson study through a webinar facilitated by RCTQ senior program manager Dr. Levi Elipane.

As speaker on Day 2 of the webinar series called “reNEUed commitment to teaching excellence,” Dr. Gonong discussed in detail the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST), Philippine Professional Standards for School Heads (PPSSH) and the Philippine Professional Standards for Supervisors (PPSS). RCTQ helped develop the three landmark documents with the Department of Education (DepEd) and are now official policies of the Department guiding more than 800,000 teachers, 43,000 school heads and more than 5,000 supervisors.

In her talk entitled “Professional Standards: National and International Benchmarks of Quality Teachers, School Heads and Supervisors,” Dr. Gonong elaborated how the three sets of standards provide a common language on the professional development, career continuum, and performance management of teachers and school leaders.

NEU President Dr. Nilo Rosas, a former president of the Philippine Normal University (PNU), helped welcome Dr. Gonong and participants representing various faculties of the NEU from all its different campuses nationwide. Dr. Rosas also praised Dr. Gonong, who once taught at NEU, for “being one of its outstanding teachers.”

“We express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Gonong who was an outstanding teacher during her time at New Era University, and continued to be an outstanding professor during my time at the Philippine Normal University. I am so happy that you are leading innovations and reforms in teacher education at PNU.” said Dr. Rosas.

Dr. Elipane, on the other hand, was the guest speaker at the Teachers’ Professional Development & Professional Learning Community Meeting (PLCM)  organized by Rizal-based Golden Sunbeams Christian School in collaboration with Colegio Sto. Domingo Educational Foundation Inc. and Masbate Catholic Education Association (MACEA) for their faculty members.

“Lesson study is a powerful professional development model that originated from Japan,” said Dr. Elipane, who studied for seven years as a Monbukagakusho scholar. “It is considered as one of the major factors why Japanese students have been consistently performing well in international standardized exams such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA),” he added.

Dr. Elipane’s research on lesson study has captured the interests of graduate students, teachers, scholars, educators and teacher educators all over the Philippines and internationally, and has been featured in 50 publications, journals, and conference proceedings since 2011.
