Some participants of the elaboration of professional standards for Madrasah education

A workshop that capacitated educators and education advocates in elaborating the Bangsamoro Teachers’ Professional and Moral Development (BTMPD) Standards so it can be embedded in teacher development and teaching practice was held on 14-16 December 2022 in Cotabato City.

The RCTQ team providing technical assistance for the project Teacher Development in Madrasah Education facilitated the workshop with policymakers, instructional leaders, officials of teacher education institution (TEI) serving the BARMM, teacher trainers, and Islamic Studies and Arabic Language (ISAL) coordinators and teachers, among others.

The BTMPD Standards are a contextualized version of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) that reflect the needs, ideals, and aspirations of the Bangsamoro people.

The workshop provided a platform for explaining and clarifying the standards through specific and actual teaching practice and identifying priority Domains and Strands for the professional development of ISAL teachers. It was led by RCTQ Director Dr. Jennie V. Jocson, Senior Program Manager Dr. Allan S. Reyes, and RCTQ consultant Dr. Twila Punsalan.

The workshop also shed light on the importance of professional standards in the Learning and Development (L&D) System for ISAL teachers both in public schools and Madaris. The contextualized standards will form the basis for designing professional development interventions for all ISAL teachers.

Participants were from the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE), BRAC Philippines, Cotabato State University (CSU), Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Pathways Program, and project partner Ateneo de Davao University Institute for Socio-Economic Development Initiatives (AdDU-ISEDI).

The project is RCTQ’s third under the Pathways Program implemented in consortium with the Mindanao State University (MSU), WMSU, and CSU. It aims to help improve the quality of teacher education in the BARMM by addressing the findings and recommendations of the RCTQ-led mapping study of TEIs serving the BARMM conducted from 2020 to 2021. (RCTQ Comms)
