The Department of Education launched Sulong EduKalidad—its new reform campaign to achieve quality in basic education—last December 3 in Pasig City, and RCTQ was there to show support and solidarity.

At the launch, RCTQ joined local and international partners, various education leaders, champions, advocates and stakeholders, including representatives from the executive and legislative branches of the government, in showing support.

RCTQ Director Dr. Gina Gonong and Deputy Director Dr. Jennie Jocson signed the Sulong Edukalidad commitment wall to signify the Center’s support.

“Through its various partnership projects with DepEd, RCTQ has always been committed to the advancement of quality in Philippine basic education by focusing on the improvement of teacher quality,” said Dr. Gonong.

“We laud the leadership of DepEd in putting high premium on quality, and RCTQ is committed to support this through high-impact policy research.”

DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones explained that the initiative is in response to the rapidly changing learning environment of present and future learners which aims to introduce aggressive reforms to globalize the quality of basic education in the Philippines. She was joined by another Cabinet official, Sec. Karlo Nograles, who leads the inter-agency technical working group (TWG) on teacher quality.

The campaign introduced the acronym KITE to symbolize its four key reform areas: (1) K to 12 Curriculum review and update; (2) Improvement of learning environment (3) Teachers’ upskilling and reskilling; and (4) Engagement of stakeholders for support and collaboration.
